Monthly Story for March 2023

“Work Smarter”

When Cheryl walked into her store, she saw Tanya standing at the register. With a frown, she walked over to her and said, “We’ve talked about this. There are plenty of things that you could be doing instead of just standing there.”

Tanya shrugged. “I was going to clean up the phone chargers, but about ten seconds ago I heard the cooler door close.”

Cheryl’s frown deepened. “What?”

“When people buy a bunch of stuff,” Tanya explained, “they often grab the cold stuff last. And if someone is here to check them out right when they get to the register, they have a better shopping experience.”

Before Cheryl could reply, around the chip aisle came an older woman with a loaded cart. From a distance, only a few items could be identified: a bag of dog food, several cereal boxes, and a gallon of milk.

Tanya gave her boss a bitter smile. “It’s almost like I know what I’m doing.”
